Tiarra Hooks was raised in Bessemer and lives in Hoover. She works in the field of social work case management. Helping others is truly her passion. Her beautiful family includes her husband and three tiny humans Kerrington, 11, Kali, 6, and Thomas Jr., 5. She was diagnosed March 6, 2023, with invasive ductal carcinoma stage IIIB shortly after her youngest turned three. Treatment started a week before her 32nd birthday with the infamous “red devil” chemotherapy. She underwent 16 treatments of chemotherapy finishing in August 2023, a unilateral mastectomy in October and 21 treatments of radiation beginning in December. She experienced more challenges along the way having to have lymph nodes removed and additional unplanned surgeries. While cancer free, she still receives monthly injections suppressing her ovaries, and daily hormonal medication. Through it all Tiarra kept her faith in God. She held dear to some of her favorite scriptures like, "Cast your anxiety unto him for he cares for you." Overall, Tiarra is grateful for her journey because it allowed her to grow closer with her village and enjoy some new restaurants with her mommy on treatment days. Tiarra knows there’s power in the strength of a woman so be grateful for the good days, and give yourself grace on the trying days.
